France Loves the U.S.

Apparently, because they want to be just like us, participating in genocidal acts and then refusing to apologize or acknowledge any responsibility. Good to see that the colonizing countries know how to stick together when it counts. If only the left had the same kind of unity.

It is odd, though - why should they care enough to get involved? It would be interesting to see what they gained by supporting one side and screwing over the other.

Power...influence...access to resources and markets -- what do colonial powers normally get? I can't really explain it though. I guess, much like the U.S. has inserted itself into the wrong side of countless tragedies, France was tight with Habyarimana's government, and once he was assassinated, they maintained their presence as military advisors and sent soldiers to stop the RPF and arm and advise the Rwandan military up through the genocide. It's doubtful they really knew the extent to which things would go (which they had to know would tarnish their international rep somewhat if it came out, so you're right, not much of a gain for them), but it's also doubtful they actually cared much if hundreds of thousands of people in Africa died in the course of their "chosen" government "solidifying" its power. France doesn't have a great history of being too worried about that.
